Question for my UK friends?

Just want to learn a little something here and well I could research it but this way is easier.... I have a question regarding Knighthood. Sir Elton John will be my example. How do people get that honor and why? What is it that they do in their lives that makes them recieve this honor? Was watching the Birthday party for Princess Di yesterday and thought of this and was just curious. Thanks to all who answer.
