I'd really love to do fashion styling or direction for a magazine someday. Any hints on how to get there?

I've been told a course in Visual Merchandising is the way to get there to do styling and so thats what i was thinking of doing. Will this be worth it? I would love to style for a magazine or marketing schemes for larger fashion companys.
