You need to know the number of chromosomes. Each chromosome has a logous pair, and they line up across from each other during meiosis. They could line up two different ways. So, to get the total number of possibilities, you take 2 to the power of however many pairs of chromosomes there are. The number of possible genotypes would be the same.
